在加入中大前，唐教授於2008年至2019年期間，任美國密歇根大學Helmut F. Stern現代中國研究教授及比較文學講座教授。此前唐教授在1991年至2008年間曾先後任教於南加州大學、芝加哥大學及科羅拉多大學博德分校。
唐教授的研究領域包括現代和當代中國文學、視覺文化、藝術史、聲音研究及文化政治，曾出版多本著作及發表多篇學術論文。英文著作包括Global Space and the Nationalist Discourse of Modernity: The Historical Thinking of Liang Qichao（《全球空間與現代性的民族主義論述：梁啟超歷史思想論》，史丹福大學出版社，1996）、Chinese Modern: The Heroic and the Quotidian（《中國現代：英雄的與日常的》，杜克大學出版社，2000）、Origins of the Chinese Avant-Garde: The Modern Woodcut Movement（《中國先鋒藝術的起源：現代木刻運動》，加州大學出版社，2008）。最新著述Visual Culture in Contemporary China: Paradigms and Shifts（《當代中國視覺文化：範式與轉換》，劍橋大學出版社，2015）分別於2018年及2020年翻譯為中文及韓文，中文譯本《流動的圖像：當代中國視覺文化再解讀》（復旦大學出版社）入選廣州《南方都市報》2018年度「十大好書」。
專著有《了解道教》(香港：三聯書店，2017) 、《廣州府道教廟宇碑刻集釋》(北京：中華書局及香港：三聯書店，2013)、《廣東地方道教研究—道觀、道士及科儀》（中文大學出版社，2007）、《宗教研究與詮釋學》(中文大學出版社，2003 )；合著有《香港道教》(香港：中華書局，2009）、《香港道堂科儀歷史與傳承》（香港：中華書局，2007）；編著有《道貫嶺南─廣州三元宮志》（中文大學出版社，2019）、《十九世紀以來中國地方道教的變遷》（香港：三聯書店，2014）、《宗教的衝突與和平》（2007）、《香港及華南道教研究》（2005）、《道教研究與中國宗教文化》（2003）、Interpretation of Hope in Chinese Religions and Christianity（2002）、《道教與民間宗教》（1999 ）等；編譯有《修心煉性 ── 〈呂祖疏解無上玄功靈妙真經〉白話註譯》（中文大學出版社，2017），更獲2020年國家教育部第八屆高等學校科學研究成果獎（人文社會科學）之著作論文獎二等獎。已發表道教學術研究論文數十篇，刊載於多份國際著名中國研究期刊。
